What is Café Rœkkr?

About Rœkkr

"Rœkkr is a Concept Café, blending together new and exciting concepts harkening both from Modern Scandinavia and the Modern Rock Music Scene, creating a unique blend of rock inspired culture alongside modern fusion and traditional cuisine from Scandinavia. Rœkkr is a place for the unity of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of today alongside the strong Scandinavian heritage which permeates the Greater Minnesota region."

Café Rœkkr is a new concept café designed and spearheaded by two Luther College alumni, Kraig Schroth and Maren Mattson, along with their friend Saffrona Carlson, alum of Augsberg College, and Pamela Daigle, alum of Marquette University.

The overall concept was simple: to bridge together something which they had all come to know over a single summer - norwegian culture - and that which they held near and dear to their hearts the rest of the year - rock music.  From this initial bud grew the idea for Café Rœkkr in the minds of Kraig and Maren, and through their combined effort was the Café born.

Origins of Rœkkr

The name Rœkkr comes from Norrønt or Old Norse.  Rœkkr, meaning ‘darkness,’ is a cognate to Gothic riqis and Sanskrit rajani and shares similar roots in Tocharian orkäm.  A reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European Language hints at an Akkadian cognate erebu meaning ‘sunset’ and shares a suggested etymology for the meaning of the word Europe (“sunset/darkness”)
